About the Opportunity
Kodiak is putting proven construction pros to work, and we’re hiring experienced Structural Fitters for shop work in the Houston area. We’re building a big crew, and this is steady, long-term work. It’s a 70-hour week, 7 days a week, so you’ll get serious hours and a big check. Second shift pays more.
We’ll be straight with you: this role starts as temp, and pay depends on your experience. The top of the range goes to fitters with years in the trade. What we can promise is steady work and plenty of hours.
If you can read a print, lay out steel right the first time, and keep the welders moving, we want to talk to you.
What You’ll Do
Blueprint Reading and Layout
- Read and work from structural blueprints, shop drawings, and specs, including weld symbols, dimensions, and tolerances
- Check drawings against the materials on hand and flag discrepancies before work starts
- Lay out beams, columns, plates, angles, and channels using tape measures, squares, levels, and chalk lines
- Mark cut lines, hole locations, and connection points accurately to print
Cutting and Prep
- Cut structural steel to size with torches, saws, and grinders
- Grind and bevel edges so joints are ready to weld
- Clean and prep material to remove slag, burrs, and mill scale
Fitting and Assembly
- Fit, position, and align structural members to the dimensions and tolerances on the drawings
- Use clamps, wedges, come-alongs, and jacks to pull members into position
- Check fit-ups for square, level, plumb, and gap before handing them off for welding
- Tack weld components in place as needed
Teamwork and Safety
- Work closely with structural welders so fit-ups are ready when they need them
- Coordinate with crane operators and foremen when moving heavy material
- Follow shop safety procedures, wear the required PPE, and keep your work area clean and organized
What You Need
- Structural steel fitting experience
- Ability to read and interpret structural blueprints and shop drawings
- Accuracy with measuring, layout, and fitting tools
