Job Description

BAS / Controls Commissioning Engineer

📍 Location: Sterling, VA/ Project-Based / Travel Required

💼 Job Type: Full-Time

💰 Salary Range: $95,000–$140,000 (DOE)

Travel: Approximately 50%–80%


Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced BAS / Controls Commissioning Engineer to perform startup, testing, troubleshooting, validation, and commissioning of complex Building Automation Systems (BAS), PLC controls, HMI/SCADA systems, and industrial control networks.

This is a hands-on, field-focused role requiring strong experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix PLCs, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View, HVAC/mechanical systems, and industrial communications.

You will work with engineers, technicians, contractors, vendors, and clients to ensure control systems are properly installed, programmed, tested, and operating according to approved sequences before final turnover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform BAS and PLC system startup and commissioning
  • Execute point-to-point checkout and I/O verification
  • Verify field device wiring, terminations, and operation
  • Calibrate sensors and associated control devices
  • Troubleshoot and modify Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix programs
  • Work with Studio 5000 / RSLogix
  • Troubleshoot and modify FactoryTalk View HMI/SCADA applications
  • Diagnose PLC logic, controls wiring, field device, and network communication issues
  • Configure and validate:
    • BACnet
    • Modbus
    • EtherNet/IP
    • Distributed I/O and network devices
  • Lead or support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
  • Validate HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and operational sequences
  • Review electrical, MEP, BAS, and controls drawings
  • Document field modifications and maintain accurate commissioning records
  • Update controls schematics and as-built documentation
  • Prepare final commissioning and client turnover packages

Required Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on experience with Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley controls
  • Advanced knowledge of ControlLogix and CompactLogix PLCs
  • Proficiency with Studio 5000 / RSLogix
  • Experience with FactoryTalk View
  • Experience commissioning PLC, HMI, and BAS systems
  • Knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, and industrial networking
  • Strong understanding of commercial HVAC and mechanical systems
  • Ability to read electrical, mechanical/MEP, and controls drawings
  • Experience using multimeters and controls diagnostic equipment
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across wiring, controls, networks, PLC logic, and field devices
  • Ability to travel approximately 50%–80%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Automation, Controls Engineering, or related field
  • Equivalent technical field experience will also be considered
  • Experience with EPMS (Electrical Power Monitoring Systems)
  • Experience on large commercial, industrial, data center, or mission-critical projects
  • Experience supporting complex startup and commissioning activities

Travel & Work Environment

This position requires significant field involvement and approximately 50%–80% travel, depending on project schedules and commissioning phases.

Work may take place in commercial facilities, industrial environments, mechanical/electrical rooms, construction sites, and active mission-critical facilities.

Candidates should be comfortable working directly with field teams and troubleshooting systems during active startup and commissioning.
