Mechanical Startup Technician (HVAC Equipment Commissioning)

📍 Location: Various Project Sites- (Based out of High Point, NC)

They are seeking an experienced Mechanical Startup Technician to support equipment startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and warranty service on large commercial mechanical systems.

Position Overview

The Mechanical Startup Technician is responsible for equipment startup, commissioning support, system testing, troubleshooting, warranty service, and preventative maintenance on commercial HVAC systems. This role works closely with project managers, field teams, manufacturers, controls contractors, and quality management to ensure systems are installed and operating according to design specifications.


Key Responsibilities

Equipment Startup & Commissioning

Perform startup and commissioning of commercial HVAC equipment including:

  • Air Handling Units (AHUs)
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Fan Coil Units (FCUs)
  • Supply, Return, and Exhaust Fans
  • Pumps and Pump Skids
  • Unit Heaters
  • Air Curtains
  • VAV and CAV Systems
  • Water Heaters
  • Humidifiers
  • Split Systems
  • Heat Pumps
  • Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAC Units)


Mechanical & Refrigeration

  • Perform refrigeration piping evacuations and charging procedures
  • Verify proper system operation and performance
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, refrigeration, electrical, and controls issues
  • Complete warranty repairs and corrective actions
  • Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical systems


Quality & Documentation

  • Review equipment submittals
  • Interpret Installation, Operation & Maintenance (IOM) manuals
  • Complete startup reports and commissioning documentation
  • Submit timesheets and expense reports accurately
  • Report project status directly to Quality Management
  • Maintain detailed service documentation


Controls & Electrical

  • Read and interpret:
    • Mechanical drawings
    • Electrical drawings
    • Controls drawings
  • Inspect electrical installations for NEC compliance
  • Assist with control system installation and verification
  • Coordinate with controls contractors and startup vendors


Field Support

  • Support project teams during startup and commissioning
  • Assist third-party factory representatives during equipment startups
  • Coordinate multiple startup activities simultaneously
  • Operate aerial lifts safely on construction sites
  • Maintain professional communication with customers and project teams


Qualifications

Required

  • EPA Universal Certification
  • Strong understanding of refrigeration systems
  • Commercial HVAC startup and commissioning experience
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical equipment
  • Ability to read mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record


Preferred

Experience with:

  • Chillers
  • Air Handling Units
  • Pumping systems
  • Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Commercial controls
  • Factory startup procedures
  • Warranty service
  • Commissioning
