Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Tacoma, WA

Salary Range: $150,000–$165,000 annually

Work Arrangement: On-site (local or relocation prior to start)

Position Summary

Our client is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Mechanical Design Engineer to support commercial, industrial, and institutional HVAC projects. This role sits at the center of engineering, construction, and customer collaboration. You’ll own mechanical design from concept through installation support, ensuring systems are code-compliant, efficient, and build-ready.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving real-world problems, working closely with project teams, and seeing their designs come to life in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Sales and Project Managers to deliver timely, field-driven HVAC design solutions
  • Analyze customer specifications and performance requirements to develop mechanical designs
  • Support budgeting efforts, pre-contract designs, and technical presentations
  • Lead all aspects of system design including research, load calculations, system sizing, layouts, component selection, and equipment specification
  • Manage multiple projects with internal and external deadlines
  • Produce complete construction-ready design documentation
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local HVAC codes for permitting
  • Develop O&M manuals, commissioning documents, and other project deliverables
  • Conduct site surveys to verify field conditions and design accuracy
  • Monitor and apply design standards and quality control practices

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in HVAC or the construction industry
  • Strong understanding of HVAC principles and technical applications
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, and equipment specifications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; CAD and Revit experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Plumbing design experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
