Field Service Technician I

Position Overview

The Field Service Technician I provides field support to clients through the commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, and retrofit of mechanical and electrical systems. This role troubleshoots mechanical and electrical equipment, controls, communications, computers, and related systems while documenting all work performed.

The technician works closely with the Quality Department, Project Engineers, Project Managers, Process Engineers, Production, QA and Engineering leadership, Field Engineers, Field Service Technicians, client personnel, and consulting engineers throughout the project lifecycle.

Additional responsibilities include supporting Quality Assurance requirements for completed equipment, performing or overseeing QC checks, compiling and communicating critical Operations & Maintenance (O&M) information during the design and construction phases, assisting with final Installation, Operation & Maintenance (IOM) manuals, and supporting project commissioning.

Cross-training in controls and electrical systems is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Commission, troubleshoot, repair, and retrofit mechanical and electrical systems.
• Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical equipment, controls, communications, computers, and related systems.
• Provide documented commissioning of mechanical and electrical portions of assigned projects.
• Direct and support field commissioning activities.
• Coordinate timely project handoff from construction to operations.
• Compile O&M information and communicate critical updates throughout the project.
• Assist with the preparation of final IOM manuals.
• Create accurate and legible red-line drawings for Project Management.
• Provide field feedback to Engineering, Quality, Production, and Project Management teams.
• Support Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities.
• Perform or oversee QC inspections as required.
• Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, Field Engineers, service technicians, and client personnel.
• Assist Production with equipment assembly and factory personnel training as needed.
• Perform other responsibilities as assigned by leadership.

Skills & Qualifications

• Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
• Exposure to at least one PLC or building controls platform.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Project.
• Ability to work independently at project sites.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.

Education & Training

• HVAC trade school and/or apprenticeship training preferred.
• Relevant military technical training or equivalent technical work experience may be considered in place of trade school certification.

Minimum Requirements

• Significant field experience in construction support, startup, commissioning, repair, and maintenance.
• Experience verifying compliance with ASHRAE, ASME, and other applicable codes and industry practices.
• Ability to travel extensively to domestic and international project sites.
• Ability to work safely and effectively in active field construction environments.
• Must possess or be able to obtain applicable safety certifications, including:
  • OSHA 10 Construction
  • NFPA 70E
  • Additional project-specific certifications as required
• Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
• Willingness to cross-train in controls and electrical systems.

Travel & Work Environment

This position requires approximately 80% domestic and international travel and regular work at active project and construction sites.

The role may also involve work in indoor environments and requires the ability to adapt to changing field conditions, project schedules, and customer needs.

Physical Requirements

The position may require:

• Occasionally exerting up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
• Sitting, stooping, bending, crouching, and performing repetitive motions.
• Regular use of hands and fingers to operate equipment, tools, and computers.
• Speaking and hearing effectively in field and office environments.
• Visual acuity, color perception, depth perception, and field of vision sufficient to review drawings and data, operate computers, conduct inspections, and perform extensive reading.
